Interviews on Human Development Through Three Generations

The research project given in psychology class was to pick a topic and interview three generations on the subject of my choice. In this paper I will talk about the following; each person I interviewed, their responses to the questions, the difficulties I faced, the stages of development each generation is experiencing, relating each generation to a theory, compare the similarities and differences each generation is experiencing in their stage of development, and what I learned from this experience. The topic I explored for each generation was music. Music can be a emotional experience, bring out feeling that we may be experiencing at that time, bring people together, and memories of the past. The three generations I picked to interview was an adolescence, early adulthood, and middle adulthood. The interview process started with the youngest age group and ended with the eldest age of the group. I had a series of interview questions and based on the age groups all the questions were the same for each generation. The following research questions were asked to all three generations: 1. What kind of music did you listen to when you were younger and has your music style changed over the years? 2. How did you buy your music and where? 3. What kind of device did you listen to your music on? 4. Does your mood determine the kind of music you listen too? Give me an example. 5. Film Study The Godfather I and II Essay Example For Students

Film Study The Godfather I and II Essay The film Godfather 1 and 2 directed by Francis ford Coppola, some characteristics of his directional style are; cinematography with specific use of close up, cross-cutting, lighting and sound through a variety of different camera angles to enhance the audiences way of thinking and having a clear understanding of the key idea â€Å"Duality of man† of the characters in the film. Francis ford copolla incorporates cinematography within the scenes of the film as it represents different perspectives making the audience discover important aspects of what is happening in the film. In Godfather 1 and 2 Francis Ford Coppola successfully uses cinematography such as the cross-cutting technique to enhance the audiences view of the characters which was in the â€Å"baptism scene† of Godfather 1 that features Michael Corleone in a ceremony of his nephew being baptised and the assassination of the 5 heads of the mafia family. Through this cross-cutting technique the audience can see the calm and innocent face of Michael Corleone as he is inside a cathedral taking the role of being godfather to his nephew. We will write a custom essay on Film Study The Godfather I and II specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As an audience Coppola is making us empathise with the â€Å"good† side of Michael Corleone making us think that he is an innocent man who has no affiliation with the business of his father by being present in a cathedral. Within the â€Å"good† side of the baptism scene it cross-cuts to the henchmen preparing to eliminate the five heads of the mafia families under the order of Michael Corleone, this shows the power of what Michael can offer showing dominance over the 5 families resulting in ending the mafia war. In the opening scene of Godfather 2, the technique of extreme close up on Michaels face can be depicted as this shot represents the role of Michael being a powerful man, along with the extreme close up follows up with a close up shot o the office chair which also symbolises power and authority. The close up shot of the office chair is powerful as it represents the legacy of Michaels father Vito Corleone, in his footsteps he has the role on carrying on the business of being a mafia leader. The use of cinematography on the character Michael Corleone in the baptism scene of Godfather 1 and the opening scene of Godfather 2 both share the role in understanding of the key idea â€Å"Duality of man† as it displays the power and authority of Michael Corleone. In the film Godfather 2, the role of the main protagonist Michael Corleone plays a significant role in contribution to the audience as we are viewing the power and authority he has to offer through the film. Francis ford Coppola skilfully does this by utilising the chiaroscuro effect to portray it. In the opening scene of Godfather 2 the chiaroscuro effect is successfully carried out by Copolla to expose the dual sides of Michael Corleone where one half of Michaels face is dark and the other is light. This effect influences the audiences understanding of the key idea â€Å"Duality of man† as it is evidently shown on the face of Michael Corleone. The light side signifying the â€Å"public side† where he is seen as an innocent figure while the dark side indicates his â€Å"private life† behind closed doors where â€Å"business† is being planned. The chiaroscuro effect is also used in the baptism scene in Godfather 1 where Michael is in the cathedral in a ceremony of his nephew being baptised, not only that but also the assassination of the five heads of the mafia family. Through this the chiaroscuro effect clearly supports the evidence as we can see the â€Å"good† side of Michael with the cathedral representing it and behind it is the illegal business being prepared by Michaels men. As an audience we are cunningly influenced by the killing but also rejoiced in the assassination of the five heads of the mafia. .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .postImageUrl , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:hover , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:visited , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:active { border:0!important; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:active , .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uccd65e5cdf743467821ff676697700cb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay about A Research Study On Quantitative Research EssayThe use of sound plays a significant role in setting the tone of a scene providing us a better understanding of the idea â€Å"Duality of man† in the Godfather 1 and 2. In the Godfather 1 the start of the film is presented by a haunting theme song alongside with the characters Bonasera and Don Corleone. After the theme song it breaks into silence between the conversation of Bonsasera and Vito Corleone. In this conversation Bonsasera is making a request for justice of his daughter because the American legal system failed him. Silence is utilised effectively by Coppola which is evident as he has done it in a private office, the idea for Coppola was to build tension as silence allows for no distraction for the audience who have to emphasis on the power and meaning of the words being said by the two characters. There is also contrast between the silence in the private office and the sound of the wedding music outside, this indicates to the audience the dual sides of a man being good and bad at the same time. The usage of sound which was also used effectively in the baptism scene of Godfather 1, religious music is played on the organ throughout the ceremony of Michael’s nephew being baptised. Michael who must act as a role model for his nephew professes his faith in God and rejecting in Satan however the assassination of the 5 heads of the family takes place the volume of the religious music increases as the cross-cutting comes back and forth of the baptism and the dirty work being done by Michaels men, the volume of the religious music increases greatly reaching its climax of the film. The use of sound helps the audience understand the tension of music and contrast between the life in closed doors and life in public. The film Godfather 1 and 2 the key idea â€Å"Duality of man† can also relate on life experiences. In response to the theme the Godfather 1 and 2 aided the audience in understanding of being a powerful mafia leader where in life we are caught up in situations where we make choices that will either benefit ourselves or it can harm us. Another example is when a person has power it can lead us to penalties where we have too much it gets uncontrollable we tend to ask for more. In conclusion, the Godfather 1 and 2 directed by Francis ford Coppola intelligently uses cinematography such as close up, cross-cutting, lighting and sound through a variety of different camera angles to strongly enhance the audiences’ way of thinking of the key idea â€Å"Duality of man†. Through the use of cinematography the theme is successfully portrayed which gives the audience a better understanding about life experiences.

The Manager of the Century Following the Track of a Born Leader

Cutting a Long Story Short: When the Organization Was Falling Apart There have been a number of theories of leadership, some of them credible and understandable, others complicated and practicing a mixture of various leadership styles; yet was no theory of success – until Jack Welch took the wheel and reinvented the whole perspective of what leadership is supposed to be.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Manager of the Century: Following the Track of a Born Leader specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Tracking the way Welch reorganized the company and turned it into a true goldmine will most possibly lead to understanding the whimsical ways in which leadership and management strategies collide to provide a perfect result. According to Angier, Pond Angier (2004), In 1960, Welch started in GR’s plastic division for an annual salary of $10,500 [†¦]. In December 1980, Welch was announced as the new C EO and chairman of GE. It was a record-breaking appointment. At 45, Welch was the youngest chief the company has ever appointed. (Angier, Pond Angier, 2004, 90) Thus, the given paper is aimed at analyzing the methods which Welch used to turn GE into a clockwork mechanism, as well as learning about the specific strategies which Welch used, the strengths and weaknesses of the leader of the XXI century, and the theories which Welch used as the life buoy for his incredible venture. Jack Welch and His Leadership Qualities: The Napoleon of the Business World There are many ways to describe Jack Welch’s personality and approach towards his employees and his business; however, the one who managed to capture the essence of Welch’s multilateral personality and distill the three ultimate qualities that make the entrepreneur the king of the business world is Shriberg; according to the latter, the main features of a leader that Welch possesses are: â€Å"(1) His personal willingn ess to keep learning and the establishment of a learning culture at GE; (2) constant open communication with employees, and (3) a willingness to take risks and embrace change† (Shriberg, 2010, 71). Considering each will bring one closer to the secret of Welch’s success. Quality #1: charging people with energy Despite rather rough and uncompromising manner of employing and dismissing the staff, Welch does have his own ways of making the company prosper, and one has to give the credit where it belongs to – with the help of a very specific leadership style, Welch has managed to bring the company back from ashes.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Welch, with the unceasing energy of his, filled the entire corporation with the desire to move on and generate new incredible ideas. Indeed, the idea of charging people with energy is one of the key principles of Welch ’s leadership manner. As Shriberg (2010) commented on Welch’s teachings, In 2005, Welch co-authored (with his wife Suzy) a book titled Winning. In this book, they stress the qualities and traits that a leader should possess. In particular, they emphasize that leaders should exude positive energy, energize others, reward and teach followers (71) Indeed, the people who feel cheerful about the project and optimistic about the prospects, the whole working process speeds up considerably. In addition, it is essential that Welch started paying a specific attention to the employees, trying to establish friendly relationships with each of them, which was crucial to the whole new idea of the GE Corporation. Feeling valued and on par with the chief of the company, the employees start working more efficiently, thus, leading the company to a doubtless triumph. However, there are two more components of Jack Welch’s style which made it so incredibly successful. Quality #2: one must have the guts Another important element of Jack Welch’s strategy, the risk-taking idea, has led to the most impressive results. According to Welch and his idea of reforming the company, when there is nothing else to do and the corporation is slowly going to a complete bankruptcy, the most reasonable thing is to hold on to the tiniest chance that one can see.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Manager of the Century: Following the Track of a Born Leader specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In Welch’s understanding, taking the not absurd chance possible is yet better than watch the company slowly dying, standing there and doing nothing. As Lane (2007) noticed, Welch told me, long ago, that he had never encountered an IBM guy who had joined GE who was really good. But he had never seen one who was really good. My observation was that they presented themselves as passionless, white-shirted techies, in contrast to the leadership corps of fantastics he was assembling. (44) Thus, the second principle that Welch used when bringing General Electric to life was the idea that even the most unbelievable opportunity is worth checking out. Even though the given suggestion might seem a bit too risky for every person I business to follow in the case of a certain emergency, it definitely works in the cases when there is nothing else to lose. Even though the given method is not to be used in every situation, in certain instances, the nothing-venture-nothing-gain attitude can lead to great success. Thus, being able to decide on a flip of a coin is another Welch’s doubtless quality. Quality #3: no regrets and nothing personal The last, but definitely not the least quality that helped Jack Welch to bring the GE its glory back is the ability to abstract away from the personal relationships and decide what is best for the company.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Although one might consider Welch’s policy on firing the employees who could not contribute to the company somewhat tough and not quite as just as it could have been, it is still important to stress that Welch was doing what was best for the company, leaving the emotions behind. As Hegar (2011) commented on Jack’s impressive start at the General Motors, â€Å"When Jack Welch took the reins in 1981, he spent a good deal of his time getting rid of managers who could not meet their goals. In fact, he soon was dubbed ‘neutron Jack,’ because like a neutron bomb, he got rid of people but left buildings and machinery intact† (333). Obviously one of his greatest assets, overloading energy is what made Welch so successful. Although the means which Welch resorted to seem quite rough, it is still obvious that Welch did what he had to do, and this fact makes him the leader that the company needed – the strong, uncompromising and resourceful man who could turn the entire world of the General Electric upside down. Cool-headed and strict, Welch is truly an ideal business leader. Welch’s Leadership Strengths and Weaknesses: When the Strings Are Pulled too Tight It goes without saying that, to make the General Electric famous once again and help the company gain even more profit than it used to, reorganizing it completely and offering a completely new style a leadership and approach to the employees, one has to be an extraordinary human being; one has to be Jack Welch. However, along with his numerous strengths, Welch also has his weaknesses, which means that his leadership style cannot be completely flawless. Once digging a bit deeper into the way Welch organized his work and changed the company’s strategy, one can possibly realize what exactly made Welch such strong a leader, as well as see some spots on the sun – that is, some minor slips in Jack Welch’s manner of managing the company. One way or another, investigating the ways in which the style of famous Jack Welch falls flat is just as exciting as learning about the incredible ways in which Jack Welch managed to return GE its glory and make the company famous once again. Once taking a closer look at the other side of the moon, one can see that each style of leadership has its flaws, and the key responsibility of a real leader is to spot the stage at which the chosen track starts leading to a dead end. Then, with a careful choice of the appropriate tactics, one can find the way out of the complicated situation, which Welch has demonstrated in his revolutionizing of the GE management style. Welch’s strengths: the three whales the earth stands on As it has been previously mentioned, the leadership style that Welch has chosen is based on both maintaining perfect relationships with employees, thus, creating the optimum atmosphere for high productivity, and at the same time demanding from the employees the best that they can do. The aspect of the trustworthy relationships with employees seems the key to Welch’s success, since without these relationships, he employees would have had an image of a tyrant for Welch, with the latter’s incredibly demanding attitude, and would have resisted the new company policy. Judging by the given strategy which Welch chose, it can be suggested that his leadership style is based on a mixture of theories. For instance, the fact that Welch’s demands for quality were incredibly high indicates that the first theory behind Welch’s strategy was Welch’s weaknesses: don’t hit a man when he is down However, even being considered a demigod in the realm of management, Welch, like any other mere mortals, has his own weaknesses, too. However, it is worth mentioning that the weaknesses of Jack Welch are rather specific and practically are the reverse side of his qualities. Indeed, any feature of a leader when being pushed to extreme turns against t its owner, which is exactly the case of Jack Welch and his corporate policy. To be more precise, Welch takes his business so seriously and follows his own rues so hard that when it is time to compromise and choose the way which goes against Welch’s own set of principles. Once facing the issue that requires choosing a â€Å"non-Welch† manner of acting, or the methods that contradict Welch’s own ideas and principles, Jack Welch is most likely to consider it inappropriate, which at certain points can pose a threat to the entire company. Therefore, the lack of flexibility is the only yet the most dangerous issue that can stand in the way for the person with Jack Welch’s means of handing the corporation. In addition, the strategy of dismissing anyone whom Welch considered not suitable for the company and/or for a certain position can be questioned. Perhaps, in certain cases, people whom Welch fired could be simply having the wrong positions and could actually be assigned for different kinds of work in the same company. Instead of analyzing the peculiarities of each of the employees and offering them the positions in which they can deliver a splendid performance, Welch simply disposed of the ones whose results left much to be desired. Indeed, a hasty manner of dismissing the people who could have actually brought profits to the company if working in a different department does not seem the decision that a wise leader would undertake. However, the given observation is based on a typical organizational situation and does not take into account the peculiarities of the GE Co From People to Models: Welch’s Leadership Style and the Theory Behind It As for the theoretical background which Welch used to achieve such incredible success in such small amount of time, it is reasonable to mention that the traits of Welch’s leadership style can be attributed to a number of various theories, which can only mean that Welch resorted to the s ituational leadership theory. As Barker (1992) remarked, The basic premise of situational leadership theories is that different leadership styles are needed in different situations [†¦]. Leaders need to adapt their style to the situation at hand. The situation theories contributed two new elements to the development of leadership theory: the situation and the follower. These theories are prescriptive – attempting to tell leaders how to act in a given situation. (Barker, 1992, 9) On the one hand, it is crystal clear that Welch used the situational leadership style to understand the company needs, adapt to the existing situation and make the necessary changes. However, it is also worth taking into account that Welch sought to develop relationships with his employees, which can be interpreted as the means to win their respect and motivate them by showing the example of a perfect worker. Thus, it can be claimed with certainty that Welch combined the situational leadership ap proach with Fiedler’s contingency theory. According to Barker (1992), â€Å"The Contingency Model of leadership effectiveness sought to integrate person, process and situation† (10). Therefore, it is obvious that Welch managed to reach the peak not only because of his winning personality, but also with the help of a solid leadership theory backing him up. However, it is also important to add that the theory which Welch used as the cornerstone of his further attitude towards the company and the employees was not only the commonly known theoretical principle, but also a blend of his own idea of leadership and management. As it has been mentioned previously, Welch often acted in spite of the management principles, which also led to quite fruitful results. Thus, it is a clear-cut case of creating a new theory of leadership – the theory of success, making an example for the newcomers and the new explorers of the business jungle – one of the most dangerous and thrilling places one has ever set foot on. The Money You WantSalary is the number one negotiated term for any new position. Do your research into the industry standards for your position, taking into account any extra expertise you might have- or any missing links. If you’re going to ask for more money, be prepared to explain why you deserve it. And why it would be in their best interests to spend the extra cash to get you on board.2. SweetenersIf you’re lucky enough to be in a field that typically offers signing bonuses, that can help mitigate a slightly lower salary offer. Again, do your research. Don’t ask for anything extortionate or too far out of the ordinary. But do use it as leverage if the hiring manager says they’d really like to offer yo u a higher salary, but they just don’t have the authorization. Maybe they can get the authorization for a signing bonus.3. Vacay DaysTime off is important to most of us. It might even be more important to you than your annual salary. If this is your main demand, you can ease up on the money talk and ask for compensation in more vacation days. Don’t forget to mention that your productivity increases exponentially when you have time off to reset.  4. Regular ReviewsHungry to get up the ladder? Not totally jazzed by your new job title? Make sure to formally request performance reviews. If you’re doing your job well, this is the surest way to title bumps and increased compensation. Show ‘em what you’ve got!5. Moving MoneyIf you need to uproot and go halfway across the country, be sure to ask for relocation assistance. Most companies have a separate budget for this. Be sure to go into the negotiation with a clear idea of how much your move is going to cost so you know how much you’ll need to ask for.  6. The Opportunity for FlexibilityThis can be a tough one, since the company doesn’t know your work style yet. They don’t know how productive and fabulous you are, because you haven’t shown them. But if schedule freedom is that important to you, or to your work, it’s okay to mention it in these initial negotiations.Remember: negotiating isn’t easy. And salary is just one piece of the puzzle. Make sure you know what your needs and wishes are, then rank them in order of importance. You can’t ask for everything right out of the gate, but you can (and should) ask for the most important.

Data mining Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Data mining - Essay Example Automated prospective analysis provided by the data mining techniques, as will be discussed below, go beyond the simple analysis of past records as availed by the retrospective tools used in decision support systems (DSS). These techniques of data mining were fundamentally as a result of the predominant long processes of research and product developments, with the first pressing need as to help in business data collection, storage and retrieval. Considering every aspects of data mining, the commonly used techniques are: Artificial neural networks Biclustering PageRank Genetic algorithms Nearest neighbor methods Rule indications. A) Data Mining Classification over large database 1. The kNN: k-nearest neighbor classification This algorithm is works by memorizing the entire training data and performing classification on conditions that the attributes of the test object matches either of the training samples accurately. The kNN seeks a collection of k objects within the training set whic h closely associates with test object, and based the assignment of an indication on the predominance of any particular class in its neighborhood. The key factors in this algorithms include the distance or similarity metric to compute distance that exist between objects; a set of the labeled objects; and the number of nearest neighbor (value of k). Advantages It is simple and easy to understand It is easy to implement its classification techniques. It can also perform so well in varied situations, hence its maximum usability. It is known for its suitability for multi-modal classes and applications in which an object is able to have a number of class labels. Disadvantages The choice of k is a limiting factor. If it (k) is too small, the result would be very sensitive to noise points. While if k is too large, the neighborhood is likely to comprise of a large number of points even from other classes. This test limits the numbers of tests records to be classified since it is true that su ch test records will not in most instances match any of the training records to the latter as recommended. The approach of combining the class labels is also considered as very complicated. 2. Page Rank This is classified as a search ranking algorithm that uses hyperlinks on the World Wide Web. Page Rank techniques produce static rankings of the Web pages in a manner that Page Rank value is accurately computed for each and every page that is off-line without depending on the search queries; but rather on the democratic nature of the World Wide Web through the use of its wide link architecture as an indicator of any individual page quality. It is worth noting that these features have helped in the success of the famous Google search engine. Advantages It is quite dependable as its outputs are always accurate and precise. It is simple and efficient to use once one has the knowledge and skills of its usability principle. Disadvantages Database search outcomes are based on literal (keyw ords, Meta data, and tags) items rather than on their actual meanings. Poor ranking of Web pages in different topological Web structures. I.e. in Google’s ranking algorithm. Less page ranks and too much time taken to list and gain high ranks for the new pages. Subsequent quotation of inaccurate information on different web pages may lead to indexing of such inaccurate pages, hence resulting to a mess of fiction. 3. Naive Bayes Advantages It is

Alignment of Academic Standards with ELL Proficiency Standards Essay

Alignment of Academic Standards with ELL Proficiency Standards - Essay Example In addition, the expose investigates the approaches that data from various sources is an essential tool in driving institutions based on the standard. Finally, the expose will investigate the approaches that the standard can be tailor-made to motivate the learner while meeting their needs. The Arizona English Language Proficient (ELP) standards are organized within different strands. These strands are Listening and speaking strand, Writing, Language strand, and reading strands. Conversely, the presentation of information is organized into different stages (grade-bands) that start from ELL 1, at the kindergarten level, to ELL V, that refers to grades 9-12 (ADE, 2012). In addition, the organization includes domains or language strand, the performance indicators, and English proficiency levels. Among the three domains, include the Proficiency Level Descriptors, found in each level that tests proficiency. These levels of proficiency can be pre-emergent, emergent, basic, and intermediate. On the other hand, Performance Indicators guide the process of identifying the knowledge, skills, and abilities that a learner should receive in different levels of ELL. In effect, the analysis of the performance indicators requires corrective measures or the movement to the next level of the ELL instructions (AED, 2012). Data regarding a learner’s performance and progress can guide the standard-based instructions. In this regard, it is evident that the various levels in ELL are indicative of the requirement of progress in a learner learning the English language. Hence, data on the learners, which is from their performance and proficient indicators, guide the instructor in identifying the progress made with the learner and provide the desired direction. In addition, the data provides feedback on the knowledge, skills, and experiences acquired by the learner and
